Israels Gauzy receives investment from Hyundai to develop light control glass technology

    2019.02.01Weili

According to foreign media reports, the Israeli nanotechnology startup Gauzy Ltd. raised US$10 million (approximately RMB 70.813 million) in Series C financing. The investment was led by Hyundai, the most popular car brand in Israel, and Blue Red partners VC and Avery Dennison, a US manufacturer of pressure-sensitive materials, participated in the investment. Headquartered in Tel Aviv, Gauzy mainly produces light-controlled glass technology products, such as dimming windshields.

Gauzy's products can actively monitor and control vehicle lighting and use dynamic sunshade technology to brighten or darken the windows. With just a button on demand, the driver can activate the current, allowing the current to flow through the UV curable thin film embedded in the window glass, turning the opaque glass into transparent. If Gauzy's glass is installed on the front and rear windshields or side windows, it can dim the incoming light, provide shading, protect privacy, and spread out danger warnings or advertisements.

Gauzy was founded in 2009 and currently has 110 employees worldwide. According to data from the data research organization PitchBook, Gauzy has raised US$12.35 million, and Hyundai Motor’s US$10 million Series C financing is part of its US$25 million financing. Hyundai is the first car manufacturer to invest in Gauzy, and Mercedes-Benz is the first car manufacturer to announce that it will adopt Gauzy technology. The company has factories in Tel Aviv and Stuttgart, Germany, and 11 manufacturers have adopted Gauzy products in future models. The first model equipped with its products is expected to enter mass production in 2021.

Gauzy CEO Eyal Peso said: "Our technology will first be applied to windshields, some manufacturers will also apply our technology to skylights, and others will be used as luxury add-ons."

In addition, this is Hyundai's fourth major investment in the Israeli automotive technology industry. Previously, the company had invested millions of dollars in MDGo Ltd. and Kardome.
